US trailer for Helena Wittmann's sailing drama "Human Flowers of Flesh"

Human Flowers of Flesh Trailer

"A hulking, flickering, beautifully crafted puzzle box." The Film Guild has released an official US trailer for a Franco-German independent film titled Human Flowers of the Fleshem>, which premiered at the 2022 Locarno Film Festival last year. Opening at the Metrograph in New York in April, with hopefully more theaters to follow. In her haunting sequel to the critically acclaimed Drift, Helena Wittmann invites us to let go of control and join her on a Mediterranean journey like no other. Ida lives on a sailboat with a crew of five. While on shore leave in Marseille, she fell in love with the French Foreign Legion and decided to sail to Sidi Bel Abbès (see Google Maps), the Legion's former headquarters in Algeria. This stars Angeliki Papoulia (also seen in Dogtooth, Alps, The Lobster, Green Sea, Patchwork) as Ida, alongside Steffen Danek, Gustavo Jahn, Ingo Martens and Denis Lavant . The film looks extremely experimental and intensely meditative, certainly not for everyone, but it's intriguing nonetheless.

After a moving encounter with the French Foreign Legion, Ida (Angeliki Papoulia) sets sail with her own body of five men, none of whom speak the same language, to chart the course of this legendary troop. Their journey will take them from Marseille to Corsica and finally to Sidi Bel Abbès, in Algeria, the historic seat of the Legion. Along the way, boundaries blur. Life at sea produces a particular form of mutual understanding. A legionnaire of yesteryear turns around. Human Flowers of Flesh is both written and directed by acclaimed German cinematographer and independent filmmaker Helena Wittmann, her second feature having directed Drift (2017) before, and tons of other shorts. Produced by Christophe Bouffil-Cantoni, Birgit Glombitza, Karsten Krause and Frank Scheuffele. This originally premiered at the 2022 Locarno Film Festival last year. The Cinema Guild will release Wittmann's Human Flowers of Flesh in select US theaters (NYC's Metrograph) beginning April 14, 2023 this spring.
