Demand is skyrocketing for villas across Europe that families can enjoy without needing to a rental car - so they can avoid the huge price hikes expected at airport rental desks this summer.

It certainly is a trend noticed by Stephen Ellison of pool villa specialist Vintage Travel.

"Interest in our 'car non-essential' villas began to increase in January when Which? rental car prices are expected to be higher than ever this summer,” he says. “We have now expanded the collection as many guests find it more relaxing to take a taxi to their villa and then walk or cycle to local shops, restaurants and beaches every day. ."

The Balearic and Canary Islands in Spain, the Italian Islands and the Algarve in Portugal are expected to experience the highest car rental costs, according to Which?, attributed to lack of vehicles. But car-free villas can be found in each.
