As a world champion triathlete, Lesley Paterson knows more about endurance than anyone.

"The dedication that comes from playing sports at this level, the obsession you need, that fire in your belly."

" You don't get as good as me at the sport and sustain it for so many years without really enjoying the process."

She applied the same determination to her other passion as a screenwriter.

In 2003, she and her husband moved to California, and she began to wonder if she could make a movie of a book she remembered first reading in school in Stirling.

All Quiet on the Western Front was first published in a newspaper in 1928. Author Erich Maria Remarque channeled all the despair and disillusion from his own experience as a German soldier in the trenches of the First World War.

It was made into a Hollywood film in 1930, which won the Best Picture Oscar.
