"How do you distract Speedy Sue?" It's obvious, Boris Johnson!

Could it be that Rishi Sunak's allies in government are desperate to distract from his own sleaze issues? Timing couldn't be a more welcome distraction

For most people outside of Westminster, this has been pretty obvious for a while.

There is no turning back the clock for Boris Johnson to return as Prime Minister.

Our disgraced former leader has made no secret of his desire to copy his hero Winston Churchill by securing a second stint in No10.

In his final words in the Commons as Prime Minister, he said 'hasta la vista, baby'.

But it has become increasingly clear that there is little appetite among Tory MPs – and more importantly voters – for a second act.

A poll released yesterday by 38 Degrees showed that 60% of the public don't even think they are fit to be an MP.

News that police are investigating - yet again - whether he broke lockdown rules will dash any hopes he has of a comeback.

So long after the event, one wonders if he will really be punished if it turns out that he did something wrong.

But even his most diehard supporters must now accept that if he made a comeback, it would also bring back the endless scandal and controversy that marked his days in Downing Street.

They might be right to wonder why this latest development is going public now.

Could it be that Rishi Sunak's allies in government are desperate to distract from his own sleaze issues?

The moment when scandal-prone Suella Braverman grabs the headlines couldn't be a more welcome distraction.
