Diwali is derived from the Sanskrit word "dipavali" which means "row of lights", and is celebrated on the 15th day of the Hindu month of Kartik, which usually falls between October and November.

The date of the festival of lights changes every year, however, Diwali usually takes place on the day of the new moon or Amavasy, which is sacred to Hindus and considered the darkest night of the year.

In 2022, Diwali started on October 22 and the five-day event is scheduled to end on October 26.

It is also usually celebrated with twinkling lights, diyas and lanterns along with lots of delicious food when families and friends get together.
