Hyundai managed to put its 'crab-walking' e-Corner technology in an Ioniq EV

The technology could make its way to production vehicles as early as 2025.

Five years after its debut at CES 2018, Hyundai's e-Corner technology is closer to reality. Following its last appearance at CES 2021, the system was on display at last week's show. And this time around, rather than building a dedicated prototype to showcase the technology, the automaker's Mobis arm has instead integrated e-Corner into an Ioniq 5 EV.

As you can see in the video shared by Hyundai (via Autoblog), the module, much like the Hummer EV's "CrabWalk" feature, allows a car's wheels to spin freely. in a way they cannot in a vehicle with a traditional suspension system. Subsequently, this allows you to perform maneuvers that you cannot perform in other vehicles. Parallel parking, for example, is as simple as turning the wheels 90 degrees and driving the car horizontally. Less practical but equally cool, e-Corner also allows cars to move diagonally and rotate in place. It is even possible to perform a pivot turn.

It will probably be a few more years before e-Corner modules start appearing in production vehicles. In 2021, Hyundai Mobis said it plans to start rolling out the technology in 2025. That said, it wouldn't be surprising to see other automakers integrating the technology into their cars as the division produces parts for other companies, not just Hyundai.
