"I've had really straight hair all my life and while I love it, I really wanted to see what it's like to curl for a while," she tells viewers before stepping into the living room.

The process is relatively simple. First, her hair is washed and cut before a solution is sprayed through the hair containing chemicals that break the natural bond in her strands, allowing the hair to be molded into a different shape or form.

The hair is then wrapped in Saran and placed under a hair dryer before undergoing a 'bend test' to ensure it can hold a curl before being put into rollers by the roots. The paper is then deposited into sections of hair which are then rolled up into rods and covered with more paper to protect the hair from the impending heat.

Then the machine resembling a brain experiment is deployed, connecting dozens of wires to each rod.

"I felt like an alien in one of those old sci-fi movies," says the brave experimenter.

Once the machine has finished doing its job, the hair is reattached to secure the curl, then washed and left to dry.

These perms are popular for their low maintenance requirements, as most recipients wash their hair and let it air-dry without the need for styling.

It is important to note the distinction that the style of the perm shown in the video (loose, natural waves) is considered a Korean perm while the technique of using the machine is called a digital perm, which actually a Korean digital perm.
