An idyllic Sicilian village has been “revitalized” after selling houses for £1, the mayor has revealed.

The depopulated village of Sambuca di Sicilia has seen a huge increase in demand for its properties since the first two auctions in 2019 and 2021.

'Foreigners "People are coming in droves to buy our houses, it's been a success so far," Giuseppe Cacioppo, the village's newly elected mayor, told CNN. 

'The two lots of houses, owned by the town hall, have revitalized the private real estate sector. People rushed to buy one at auction, but failed to make the final choice, and instead bought a cheap house. So far, 250 houses have been sold.'

An idyllic Sicilian village has been “revitalized” after selling houses for £1, the mayor has revealed.
