Indonesia's Arema and Persebaya return to disaster at Kanjuruhan Stadium to end the game

April 12 - The rematch of an Indonesian club game that ended in one of the world's worst stadium disasters was played behind closed doors on Tuesday.

Last October, 135 people died in a crush following a match between fierce rivals Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya at Arema's Kanjuruhan Stadium.

Many died in a deadly stampede as they fled towards the exits after police fired tear gas into the crowd - a control measure banned by FIFA.

Tuesday's rematch was played in front of a handful of journalists, club officials and security guards, although hundreds of police were seen on guard outside the stadium.

Persebaya won 1-0 after Arema missed a last-minute penalty, although Arema coach Joko Susilo said some members of his squad did not play due to the mental impact of the previous match.

"We know that some players have been deeply traumatized," he said.

Two club officials were jailed last month after Arema was found guilty of criminal negligence causing death. Three other people have been charged in connection with the incident.
