The Queen of Denmark's decision to strip the royal titles from four of her grandchildren sparked a bitter royal feud between junior family members and the monarch embroiled in a war of words in the press.

Days after the announcement, Queen Margrethe apologized to her family for "underestimating" the impact of stripping the titles of prince and princess from the children of her second son, Prince Joachim .

But she also stressed that her decision is final and that Princes Nikolai, 23, Felix, 20, and Henrik, 13, and their sister Princess Athena, 10, will be known as the Count or Countess and will be called their Excellencies next year.

His mother's decision angered Joachim's camp, with the younger brother saying the children were upset that their 'identities' had been 'suppressed'.

Joachim told Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet: "We are all very sad. It's never fun to see your children mistreated like this. They end up in a situation they don't understand."
