But Balbirnie said, "It wasn't too psychologically damaging as such."Speaking ahead of Wednesday's T20 opener in Bristol against the South Africans, which will be followed by another encounter at the County Ground on Friday, Balbirnie said the Irish "need to get back on their horses".
"The beauty of this summer is that there are so many internationals, so you can't dwell on it too much.
"We still have a lot of games to play before heading to the [T20] World Cup."
Ireland beat South Africa in a one-day international at Malahide last summer as Balbirnie's 102 helped them to a victory of 43 points in a contest that offered World Super League points.
After the matches with South Africa, Ireland will face Afghanistan in a five-match T20 series which begins at Stormont next Tuesday and runs until August 17.
