James Cameron could "hand over" to another director after "Avatar 3"

Although James Cameron has been deeply entrenched in developing sequels to his 2009 blockbuster "Avatar" for more than a decade, the director has shared that he plans to leave the world of Pandora behind for other later projects .

The first "Avatar" sequel, subtitled "The Way of Water," is set to hit theaters on December 16. A third film in the "Avatar" series has been filmed following "The Way of the Water" and is slated for a 2024 release.

While Cameron certainly has a vision for more "Avatar" stories after these two movies, he might not be leading potential later entries. The director said he plans to leave the franchise in the hands of another director after completing work on the third entry.

“The Avatar movies themselves are pretty consuming,” Cameron said. "I have other things that I'm developing as well that are exciting. I think over time - I don't know if it's after three or four hours - I'll want to hand over to a director in whom I I trust to take over, so I can go do other things that I'm also interested in. Or maybe not. I don't know."

Even so, Cameron expressed his excitement that his grand plan for the "Avatar" saga might come to fruition.

"The fourth movie is a plug. It's a motherfucker. I really hope to get there. But it depends on market forces," Cameron said. "Three is in the box, so it's coming out anyway. I really hope we get to do four and five because it's a big story, in the end."

Cameron quit directing for projects he spent years in with 2019's 'Alita: Battle Angel', which was eventually helmed by Robert Rodriguez while Cameron remained attached to production as executive producer and co-writer.
