Jamie Carragher insists former club can finish fourth if they become 'old-time Liverpool'

Jamie Carragher backed Liverpool to finish in the top four despite a slow start to the 2022-23 season.

The Reds are ninth in the Premier League with four wins in their first 12 games.

They qualified quite comfortably in their Champions League group despite suffering a heavy 4-1 loss to Napoli on Matchday 1.

It's been a bizarre start to the season for Jurgen Klopp's side.

They bounced back from failing to win one of their opening three league games by beating Bournemouth 9-0.

And after securing a win from six, Liverpool won 7-1 against Rangers, beat Manchester City and West Ham 1-0, respectively, only to lose at Nottingham Forest.

A 3-0 win at Ajax was then bolstered by a 2-1 loss at home to Leeds United, who became the first team to win at Anfield with Virgil van Dijk on the pitch as a player Liverpool.

Of course, they responded by inflicting Napoli's only defeat of the season on Tuesday.

Liverpool face Tottenham Hotspur away on Sunday which will obviously be a win as they are not favourites.

And despite already being seven points behind fourth place and 15 points behind league leaders Arsenal, Jamie Carragher backed his former side to finish fourth ahead of Manchester United and Chelsea.

Carragher praised Arsenal as one of his "favorite" teams to watch this term.

He backed the Gunners to finish second behind Manchester City, with Tottenham rather third.

"I think North London clubs [Arsenal and Tottenham] are both going to be in it now, I really believe in it," he told the Daily Mirror.

"I loved watching Arsenal, they're almost my favorite team to watch this season.

"I think Liverpool will get there ahead of Chelsea and Man United, and then the two north London clubs will be alongside Man City.

"But I think it will be a fight that will go all the way and as a Liverpool supporter, if you offered me fourth place now I would bite your hand.

"I think Liverpool are in a good fight for that and they could easily finish sixth. But I think Liverpool will stay there and I think in this second half of the season we need to see the Liverpool of old at some time.

"When Liverpool come back to that, it's too much for everyone in this league except Man City. But if they don't get that consistency back, it's going to be tough for them."< /p>
