Jeremy Strong reacts to shock of 'Succession' death: 'It went through my heart'

SPOILER ALERT: This article discusses the gargantuan plot developments in "The Marriage of Connor," Season 4, Episode 3 of "Succession," now streaming on HBO Max.

Jeremy Strong speaks out for the first time on the shocking death of "Succession" last week . The star, who plays Kendall Roy on the HBO series, was the focus of the episode "Connor's Wedding," written by "Succession" creator Jesse Armstrong, which featured the disappearance of family patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox) .

"It crossed my heart, not my mind," Strong told Variety. "I mean, it didn't cross my mind as much as I found it heartbreaking to read and experience while we were doing it."

Strong said he was indeed shocked, as were "Succession" fans, by "the suddenness of it, the banality of it, the ordinaryness of the way these things happen, the inability to somehow make the moment what you want it to be. The suddenness of those things, and the irrevocability of those kinds of things that happen. The fact of death, the fact of them, and now we have to deal with this grief and this loss in the midst of, you know, a fight of vipers."

The episode was directed by executive producer Mark Mylod, and centered both on the boat on which Connor Roy (Alan Ruck) and siblings Kendall, Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) are reunited, and the Waystar Royco plane, where Logan flew with his management team in Sweden, in order to trying to salvage a chord.

Strong spoke to Variety on Saturday at the ninth annual Breakthrough Prize Giving. The event, held at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, honors "the world's greatest scientists whose work fuels modern scientific achievement."

Strong and Cox don't necessarily agree when it comes to actor styles - in in particular, Strong's use of the action method. Cox called Strong's style "fuckin' boring" in an interview and later expressed his thoughts to Variety: "I'm sorry. All that 'I think, therefore I feel' kind of thing. . Just do the work. Don't identify yourself."

"Succession" Season 4 airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
