Keir Starmer pledges state-owned energy company in conference speech

Keir Starmer has pledged to create Britain's own state-owned electricity company to help bring down the cost of bills if Labor wins power.

The Labor leader said Great British Energy would increase the supply of renewable energy by harnessing the country's sun, wind and waves.

The nationalized electricity generator, which will work alongside existing private companies, aims to bring down prices for families and ensure energy independence from Britain.

He said: "A new business taking advantage of the opportunities of clean UK energy and because it's good for jobs, because it's good for growth, because it's good for energy independence from tyrants like Putin.

"Yes conference, Great British Energy will be publicly owned."

Labour pointed out that many European, Asian and American countries have state-owned production companies, including EDF in France and Vattenfall in Sweden.

It builds on Labour's pledge to make the UK a clean energy superpower by 2030 and to create a National Wealth Fund.

The pledge came in his opening speech at the Labor Conference in Liverpool in which he said he was ready to kick the Tories out of No 10.

He told delegates a 'cloud of anxiety' hung over the public and accused the Tories under Liz Truss of crashing the pound and offering tax cuts to the top 1% of the company.

Mr. Starmer added, "They used to lecture us on fixing the roof when the sun was shining. They didn't just fail to fix the roof.

“They ripped up the foundations, smashed the windows and now they blew the doors off for good measure.”

The Labor leader also received a standing ovation during his speech when he pledged to make the Labor Party “fit to serve our country”.

"That's why we had to eradicate anti-Semitism from its roots. Why we had to show that our support for NATO is non-negotiable. Show that we want business to prosper. Let go of unworkable policies Country first, party second." ...
