Labour leader says millions are 'very, very worried' families forced to hand food off supermarket shelves to 84-year-old woman in Dewsbury 'too scared' to heat your house in winter.

He told the Mirror: "I've been talking endlessly to the families who are going to be affected by this.

"They described to me going to the supermarket and picking up food they would otherwise have received and putting it back.

"Millions of people are really worried: they know the prices are going up. And they're very, very worried about what they'll be able to do."

He added, "It's about whose side are you on? Where are you with these companies that are making these huge profits and these families that are suffering every day?"

Labour pledges to freeze the energy price cap at its current level of £1,971 until the end of March next year.

This would block increases to £3,600 in October and £4,200 in January. The £29bn difference would be given to energy companies and not refunded.

Speaking to the Mirror, the Labor leader did not rule out having to spend more from April when bills could top £5,000.

Calling the crisis a "national emergency," he said, "I know full well how it will affect millions of families this fall."
