Kevin Trapp snubs Man Utd despite promising game time on 'trembling' De Gea

Manchester United have reportedly missed their best goalkeeping target with Kevin Trapp set to stay at Frankfurt.

Rumors of United's interest in Trapp surfaced earlier this week, following David de Gea's lackluster start to the season at Old Trafford.

De Gea's weakness in ball possession was on full display in United's 4-1 loss to Brentford, in which the Spain international failed to cope with heavy press from opposition and allow his team to play from behind.

The USA No.1 instead kicked the ball long against Liverpool, with more spin, but coach Erik ten Hag covets a goalkeeper who is good on the ball and can build attacks from behind.

Borussia Mönchengladbach striker Yann Sommer has also been linked with a move to the Premier League side, but he and Trapp are said to have reservations as they don't want to be a substitute goalkeeper in a year of World Cup.

But German publication Sport1 claims that Trapp was guaranteed playing time by United.

He was told he would play all of their Carabao Cup and Europa League games before Qatar, but he would also have every chance of dislodging De Gea in the Premier League.

The report claims that De Gea is seen as a 'fragile' candidate internally, while United are also aware that he only has one year left on his current contract.

It is claimed Trapp was considering a move to United, who reportedly offered him a four-year contract and said on Monday night he was flattered by the interest.

"As I said when I was first in Frankfurt, it's always nice when rumors like this come out," Trapp said at the SportBild Awards ceremony in Hamburg.

"It's a nice recognition. But I can't say anything about it."

Reports suggest Frankfurt want £21m for the 32-year-old, but club manager Markus Krosche said at the same event that the Premier League side have yet to make an approach , while manager Oliver Glasner insisted he wanted Trapp to stay.

"From a sporting point of view, of course I would like to keep such a great goalkeeper and person," he said. "He's a great role model and he's always one of the first to come into training. But I'm not the final decision maker."

And, according to SportBild journalist Christian Falk, Trapp has now made up his mind.

Falk tweeted on Thursday: 'TRUE Kevin Trapp informed Manchester United yesterday that he will not accept the proposed contract until 2026. he remains at Frankfurt'.
