King Charles III told Liz Truss that the His mother's death was 'the moment I dreaded', as he held his first audience with the Prime Minister at Buckingham Palace.

Ms Truss spoke briefly by telephone to the King on Thursday evening to express his condolences to him on the passing of his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II.

But it was the first time the Prime Minister had spoken to him face to face since becoming king on the death of his mother.

The Prime Minister, who only took office on Tuesday, was driven from Downing Street to meet Charles after returning to London from Balmoral.
