Full list of King's birthday honours, from unsung heroes to TV stars and footballing legends

King Charles is 'delighted' that his first birthday honors list recognizes some of Britain's unsung heroes with awards.

It comes just seven days after faith in the system was shaken after disgraced ex-Prime Minister Boris Johnson used his own resignation honors list to award gongs to close allies in the number 10.

Charles III's list ranges from a grieving mother who turned a tragedy into a charity honoring her legacy, a 106-year-old fundraiser through exercise and those helping Ukrainian refugees.

An honors source said, "Everyone is thrilled with this year's honors, it really feels like the best of the best have been recognized.

"Word from the Palace is that the King himself is delighted with the wide range of community heroes involved, from charity workers to teachers to NHS workers, there is a real sense of community everywhere."

A total of 1,171 people received honours, including 332 Medals of the British Empire (BEM), 471 Medals of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) and 236 Orders of the British Empire (OBE) ).

Among those honored, 50% are women and 11% are from ethnic minorities.

Almost a quarter - 23% - considered themselves to be from lower socio-economic backgrounds.

Members of the public can nominate people who they believe have made a significant contribution to public life, who are then reviewed by an independent committee.

Those who pass then receive an honor stamped by the monarch.

Suzanne Richards, whose world was torn apart in the 2015 terrorist attack in Tunisia, is one of 1,100 people honored with an MBE.

Her youngest son Owen, who was then just 16 and celebrating the end of his GCSE, was also shot by the gunman but survived the attack in Port El Kantaoui, near Sousse.

Suzanne and Owen, who live in Wednesbury, West Mids, set up the Smile for Joel charity in 2017 which supports others bereaved by murder and has raised over £500,000.
