Presenter Kirsty Young spoke about her "terrible" experience with chronic pain, which led her to take a four-year hiatus.
Young quit her job as host of Desert Island Discs in 2018 due to fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis.
After returning on the air earlier this year, she has now returned to the BBC Radio 4 show for its Christmas Day episode - this time as an interviewee.
Chronic pain 'takes you away,' she told her successor Lauren Laverne.
"You lose your personality, you lose your sense of humor, you per dent your sense of self - there are all sorts of things that go with it. It's awful."
Fibromyalgia causes pain throughout the body and can cause intense fatigue, while rheumatoid arthritis causes pain, swelling and joint stiffness.The two long-term conditions are often linked.
