Klopp: I'm 100% responsible for Liverpool's 'trash' season

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said he is '100% responsible for this rubbish', but is certain the club will be able to get through their difficult season 'in style'.

After sorely missing out on a quadruple last season, the Reds have endured a difficult 2022-23 campaign which has already seen them knocked out of all cup competitions, as they sit eighth in the Premier League ahead of the game. Sunday's Anfield clash with the leaders. Arsenal.

The Reds won the EFL Cup and FA Cup in 2021-22, reached the Champions League final and finished just one point behind Premier League winners Manchester City.

With 10 games to go this season, Liverpool's 43-point tally is less than half of what they amassed in 2021-22, and Klopp admits that's unacceptable.

"I'm sorry for our people, that they didn't have the season they wanted. But in the long run, they will forget that," Klopp told Sky Sports.

"I don't care what we did last year or years before. I'm 100% responsible for this garbage and that's really not cool."

The German manager recently admitted that his generally impeccable record with the club was probably why his work has gone unquestioned, and shared his appreciation for the support he and his team continue to give receive fans.

“I know everyone can express their emotions in an instant and there will be a lot of negative comments about us – I understand that,” he said. "But the people in the stadium are amazing.

"You see things happening at other clubs, not just sackings, but teams against owners, fans against owners, fans against the team - I've seen it all.

"But if anyone can walk through a situation like this with class, I really think it's us as a club."

Liverpool played every game possible last season (63), and the associated fatigue was cited as one of the reasons for their dramatic decline in form, while Chelsea (61 games) and City (56 games) also saw their points totals go down.

"What you've seen this year is that a lot of the teams that performed last year at an extremely high level aren't exactly there," Klopp added. "Same City. Of course, they play sensational football, but they don't have the same total points as last year [64, compared to 69 at the same stadium in 2021-22].

"Intensity, at some point, catches you and maybe it caught up with us this year. But that's no excuse for the next 10 games.

"That may explain why we're not at our best. We haven't found a way to achieve consistent performance."

With 13 points behind Newcastle United and Manchester United, third and fourth respectively, it will take a significant turnaround for Liverpool to qualify for the Champions League, even if they are one game less.

Klopp thinks a 'lack of confidence' played a part, along with injuries, but his side's potential is still on display with a 9-0 win over Bournemouth earlier in the season and a 7-1 thrashing 0 against rivals United in their last home game.

Their shortcomings were revealed again only six days later, stumbling in a 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth.

"World-class players behave on a strange level," he said. "It started with injuries and players coming back early, and we've never really settled in this season.

"We have to get through this and I have no problem with that. When I look back 10 or 15 years from now, this season will probably not be involved in highlights, but I hope there will be a lot of things we can learn from it and use next year.

"But we have to fight and it's hard. If it was easy, they wouldn't pay me so much money.

"We had a super weird season. We had the two highest wins in our history, but a week later we can't do it."
