"Absolutely, 100%," Kwasi Kwarteng replied on Thursday when asked if he would still be chancellor by next month.

Fast forward less than 24 hours and Mr Kwarteng was already the former Chancellor.

He had only held the position for 38 days, the second shortest time ever in the position behind Iain Mcleod, who died in office in 1970.

Kwarteng's unfortunate words came to New York where he was meeting with the International Monetary Fund.

Despite the economic turmoil in Britain, he raised his eyebrows as he confidently declared he was secure in the second most powerful job in the country.

"I'm not going anywhere," he remarked.

But, even if he didn't know it, he was going somewhere...fast.

This morning he was on his way to No 10, summoned by a prime minister who was already planning a U-turn on the mini-budget that had scared markets and trashed Tory polls.

At 1:03 p.m., he confirmed he had been sacked and posted a letter to the prime minister on social media.

It read: "You have asked me to step down as Chancellor. I have accepted."

In return, Ms. Truss replied, "As a long-time friend and colleague, I am deeply sorry to lose you from the government."
