Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer faces appeals to the suspension of MP Rupa Huq after he described Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng as 'superficially' black.

In audio posted online, Ms Huq can be heard discussing her elite academic background, before adding that "you wouldn't know he was black" listening to him on the radio.

The comments by the MP for Ealing Central and Acton, west London, appear to have been made at a side event at the labor conference in Liverpool on Monday.

Earlier this month, Mr Kwarteng became Britain's first black Chancellor.

Conservative Party Chairman Jake Berry shared his "serious concerns" in a letter to Sir Keir, the audio being published by the Guido Fawkes website abbreviated therein ahead of his speech at the conference.

"I hope you will join me in condemning unequivocally these remarks as nothing less than racist and that the Labor Whip be removed from Rupa Huq accordingly,” he wrote.

Ms Huq was reportedly seated next to Labor Speaker Anneliese Dodds when she made the remarks.

In the audio, Ms. Huq could be heard saying, "On the surface, he's a black man.
