Labour is on course to win a comfortable majority of 56 seats in the next election, according to a new poll.

As polling intentions stand, Keir Starmer will win the keys to No. 10 with a 12-point lead over the Tories if such a result materializes in the 2024 election, Savanta ComRes' MRP model for LabourList watch.

In her first speech as Prime Minister, Liz Truss ruled out a snap election, following suggestions that she could not establish a dominant majority like her predecessor Boris Johnson.

If voters were to follow their current intentions in the next election, due in 2024, the poll indicates Labor would regain many so-called “red wall” seats, including Ashfield, Bassetlaw, Blyth Valley, Sedgefield and Workington.

Shabana Mahmood has become the latest senior Labor MP to challenge the new Prime Minister to go to the polls.

She told delegates, "Hopefully in a year from now I'll be standing here and telling you how we won a general election."

Ms Mahmood, MP for Birmingham Ladywood and national campaign co-ordinator, said Labor was 'on its feet again' after a 'decade of defeat, decline and embarrassment' at the ballot box.
