LaLiga returns Huracan to police for rigging Copa del Rey tie

February 24 - Spanish La Liga have confirmed an investigation is underway into a possible case of match-fixing in a Copa del Rey game two years ago.

The Spanish league said it had lodged an official complaint with the National Police Center for Sports Integrity and Gambling (CENPIDA) following an anonymous tip regarding the first-round game between Levante and minnows Huracán Melilla, which Levante won 8-0.

Six people linked to Huracán have already been questioned. No one from Levante was involved in the alleged irregularities, the league said, and Levante - currently in the second division but in the top flight at the time - confirmed it had nothing to do with the allegations. /p>

Huracán Melilla was only founded in 2020 and plays in the fifth tier of Spanish football after being promoted last season.

The club said it would cooperate with the authorities and punish anyone found guilty. According to police, one of those arrested was a former Huracan player for allegedly participating in fixing several matches in order to profit from betting.

"The club has always stood for fair and clean play and will do whatever is necessary to combat fraud," Huracan said in a statement.

"We would like to make it clear that if an active member of the club is involved, disciplinary and legal action will be taken immediately."
