Shamima Begum loses challenge to stripping British citizenship

Human rights lawyers have criticized the decision to strip Shamima Begum of her British citizenship, describing the government's attitude towards her as "offensive" and "appalling".

Begum, who left east London aged 15 to join the Islamic State (ISIS), challenged the decision taken by then Home Secretary Sajid Javid, in 2019 to deny him a UK passport.

Yesterday, the Special Immigration Appeals Commission (Siac) decided that the decision was legal and ruled that the suspicions that she had been trafficked to Syria were insufficient for her to obtain successful on appeal.

Although they said there were 'credible suspicions' that she was a victim of trafficking, they concluded that the Home Secretary was under no formal obligation to take this into account when he stripped him of his citizenship.

The judges described the case as "great concern and difficulty" and that she was "recruited, transferred and then harbored for the purpose of sexual exploitation".

Human rights lawyer Shoaib M Khan told Express.co.uk the decision was "disappointing" as Begum is still stuck in a camp in northern Syria.

He said: "It is offensive and appalling that the British government's response to the trafficking of a British child to a war zone for the purpose of sexual exploitation has been to strip him of his British citizenship and permanently stuck there."

Maya Foa, director of legal charity Reprieve and a human rights lawyer, pointed to the records of our Western allies.
