Major cryptocurrency hardware wallet provider Ledger is getting closer to launching its planned solution to allow users to back up and recover a Ledger device seed.

Ledger CTO Charles Guillemet took to Twitter on June 21 to announce that the hardware wallet company had made the Ledger Recover whitepaper open source.

Today we are releasing the White Paper on Ledger Recovery, a key step in enabling anyone to audit cryptographic protocols.

This builds on over 150 apps and other open source features that Ledger has already implemented.

Guillemet said the next service is expected to launch in Q4 2023, provided by digital asset security firm Coincover. The main takeaway from the white paper is that the new service is "100% secure", assured the CTO. "You can learn precisely how it works technically and review the service yourself," he noted.

Available on GitHub, the Ledger Recover whitepaper provides a 34-page document including a technical overview of Ledger's solution for hardware wallet seed backup and recovery.

The Ledger Recover repository enables three main workflows, including backing up the seed, restoring it to a new device, and securely deleting backups. The whitepaper also includes data on the system design and cryptographic protocol of Ledger Recover.

One implementation includes splitting the seed into shares using the existing private key distribution technology known as
