Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp fumes at players for 'completely unnecessary' goals at Man City

Jurgen Klopp has slammed his Liverpool side's defense in their Carabao Cup loss to Manchester City. The holders suffered a 3-2 defeat at the Etihad to exit the competition in the fourth round.

There was no hangover after the World Cup in a game that was extremely enjoyable for the neutrals. City took an early lead through none other than Erling Haaland.

Liverpool couldn't prevent a cross from the left and the Norwegian superstar pushed hard home. The visitors bounced back thanks to a smart finish from Fabio Carvalho despite City dominating in the early stages.

The game was level at the break but there was a quick start in the second half. City were back in less than two minutes after a sublime touch from Riyad Mahrez who had set up for a delicious goal.

But almost before City fans had stopped celebrating, Liverpool were level after Mohamed Salah received an open goal from Darwin Nunez. Klopp's side had to pay for a number of key missed chances, especially from Nunez.

Kevin de Bruyne was at his best and set up Nathan Ake for what turned out to be the winner. The Dutch international was left free at the far post to head home after a short corner.

Klopp was unimpressed with the way his side defended all three of City's goals, but especially Ake's. Klopp told Sky Sports: "It was the first shot [after half-time] or whatever, so it was pretty quick that they scored the second goal, which was world class from Riyadh but before that , we could have done completely different.

"I liked a lot of things, apart from the first 15 minutes but it's ok against City if you have to change and adapt. The goals we conceded were all completely useless. When you see the third but... We changed before, not directly before, but it gave a new organization.
