Liz Truss hints at U-turn in cost of living as she could give 'targeted aid' to Britons

Liz Truss appears to be closing in on a cost-of-living turnaround after a key ally said she would consider 'targeted aid' for the British.

The PM's next favorite has refused to rule out cost-of-living payments - seconds after calling it 'Gordon Brown economics, I don't support it'.

Her ally James Cleverly revealed, "For people who won't directly benefit from the tax cuts, she is considering targeted relief."

And she told the Evening Standard: 'I can assure you that I will do my utmost to help households across Britain. I understand how difficult the circumstances are.

"I'm someone who gets things done. I look at the evidence and sort things out and that's what I'm committed to doing."

It is believed that Ms Truss is not currently considering targeted aid, despite what Mr Cleverly has said, but is preparing to consider it as the crisis unfolds. Ms Truss' allies insisted her comments were not a U-turn, as she had always said 'of course I'll look at what more can be done'.

It comes as Ms Truss faces an avalanche of calls to rethink and offer what she calls 'handouts' to Britons with disabilities, jobs or pensioners.

"I review the evidence and sort things out and that's what I'm committed to doing," she said (
