Liz Truss is the new UK Prime Minister, replacing Boris Johnson in the 'best job in the world'

Liz Truss is the new British Prime Minister. Truss will replace Boris Johnson, who left office in July following numerous scandals.

She becomes the third female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May.

In her speech, she thanked "my friend" Johnson. “You have completed Brexit. You crushed Jeremy Corbyn. You deployed the vaccine and stood up to Putin."

Truss, who was Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development, and Rishi Sunak , who previously served as Chancellor of the Exchequer, were both favorites for the job (pictured above) They are both members of the Conservative Party of Parliament (MPs).

The news was announced at the Queen Elizabeth II Center in Westminster, where members of the Conservative Party met gathered to hear the news after voting for their favorite candidate.

Truss will take over as leader of the Conservative Party and automatically become the next Prime Minister. In the UK, members of the public vote for their local party candidates rather than the party leader; party members then elect a leader. If the party is in power, the leader becomes Prime Minister; if they are the largest political party not in government, their leaders take the title of Leader of the Opposition.

The two politicians emerged as favorites battled this summer to try to replace Johnson. Johnson was effectively forced to resign after appointing disgraced MP Chris Pincher as Deputy Chief Whip, despite being aware of previous allegations of sexual misconduct against Pincher.

As a result of the allegations, more than 50 officials resigned from the government in less than 48 hours.

The Pincher hubbub came on the heels of the Partygate scandal, which involved a series of parties held at 10 Downing Street - which is Johnson's office as well as his private home - and attended by senior government officials during the strictest period of the UK lockdown. A number of photographs have shown the presence of the British Prime Minister at these gatherings.

Johnson announced on July 7 that he would be leaving his post, calling it "the best job in the world ." He will officially tender his resignation to Queen Elizabeth II today. The Queen will then confirm Truss as the new leader of the UK

The new Prime Minister will now be responsible for uniting the party and choosing a new cabinet, which will govern portfolios such as the Home Office, the Foreign Office and the Department of Culture, Media and Sport. She will also have to deal with some of the country's most pressing issues, including soaring energy bills and inflation, as well as Putin's growing threat in Russia.

The UK TV industry is also hoping a change in administration will provide a reprieve from performing for the public service broadcaster Channel 4, which Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries had planned to privatize under Johnson. Truss is expected to replace Dorries as Culture Secretary.
