When Liz Truss became prime minister, this newspaper said she deserved a chance to prove herself.

We had reservations about some wild promises during the leadership campaign, but felt no one could be worse than Boris Johnson.

We urged it to freeze energy prices, and it did. Then the Queen died and Mrs Truss's post as Prime Minister was suspended.

What we didn't expect when political life returned was that Ms Truss was so recklessly flushing the UK economy down the toilet.

Whether through ignorance, arrogance or stupidity, it was an act of supreme folly to think that she could reset the UK financial system without the economic forecasts to go with it.

Already nervous, markets reacted with panic, dumping pounds by the ton, derailing mortgage rates and destroying the dreams of young first-time buyers.

At the other end of the age bracket, pension funds were only saved from bankruptcy by the Bank of England raising £65 billion to save them.
