Liz Truss signed her own death warrant today. Any hope she might have had that she could overcome a disaster on her own was dashed during a nine-minute press conference.

Instead of steadying the ship, the Prime Minister reiterated all the reasons why she shouldn't lead the country.

It wasn't just the U-turn on its flagship corporate tax cut policy that sealed its fate. It was her complete inability to show any contrition for the damage she inflicted on her country and her party.

When you lead a party that has burned three chancellors in almost as many months, raised the price of people's mortgages, and wrecked the economy, then you are expected to show some form of remorse.

His answers to the questions were absurd. You can't tear up the centerpiece of your mini-budget and then tell people "the mission remains the same".

It is laughable to fire your chancellor after he has caused carnage in the markets and then claim that your priority is to ensure "economic stability".

She could not explain why Kwasi Kwarteng got the boot, but she can stay as there is no plausible answer to this question.

Sacking Kwarteng won't save her.

No matter how much she changes the band's line-up and shakes up the setlist - the audience is long gone.

There's no reason for her to stay. Her economic strategy has disintegrated, she is unable to lead her party and she has no connection with the public.
