Trailer for Luca Guadagnino's Doc movie 'Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams'

Slavatore: Shoemaker of Dreams Trailer

"A new world opened up before my eyes." Sony Classics has unveiled the US trailer for a documentary film titled Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams, directed by Call Me By Your Name by Italian director Luca Guadagnino. It's a fascinating story! Don't write this one even if you don't like shoes very much. This documentary premiered at the 2020 Venice Film Festival during the pandemic (I was there! I saw it!) and despite mixed reviews, it has been waiting for its release for two years. In the early 20th century, Salvatore Ferragamo, an impoverished teenage Italian shoemaker, sailed from Naples to America in search of a better life. He settled in Southern California and became Hollywood's go-to cobbler in the Silent Age. In 1927, he returned to Italy and founded his eponymous luxury brand in Florence. This film chronicles her adventures, going through her years in Hollywood during which all the famous people loved her because her shoes fit her better than anything they had ever worn; and his return to Italy where his brand is now run by a family of goons who don't care much about his heritage other than money. It is narrated by Michael Stuhlbarg as Salvatore and stars Martin Scorsese. I highly recommend this document, especially to anyone who loves stories about old Hollywood.

Slavatore: Shoemaker of Dreams Poster

Growing up in poverty in Bonito, Italy, Salvatore Ferragamo began his career as a shoemaker before he was barely a teenager. Immigrated to America in 1915 at the age of 16, his work would soon help invent the glamor of Hollywood's silent era by designing shoes for iconic films such as The Thief of Baghdad and The Ten Commandments and for stars such as Gloria Swanson, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, many of whom became his friends. Overcoming a Depression-era setback, Ferragamo then bounced back and would define mid-century elegance for many performers, including Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Bette Davis, Rita Hayworth and Ingrid Bergman – all while throwing herself into a story of love and a warm family life with his wife, Wanda, and their six children. Salvatore: Cobbler of Dreams is directed by acclaimed Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, director of movies The Protagonists, Melissa P, I Am Love, A Bigger Splash, Call Me By Your Name and Suspiria above, plus some other docs. This was originally shown at the 2020 Venice Film Festival a few years ago. Sony Pictures Classics will debut Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams in select US theaters starting August 19, 2022 later this summer. Anyone interested?
