Luther: The Fallen Sun Teaser Trailer Confirms Netflix Movie Release Date

The next sequel to the hit British detective series Luther now has a release date, with Netflix confirming that Luther: The Fallen Sun will premiere on February 24, 2023 in theaters.

The film will be available in select theaters in February, then hit Netflix for all subscribers on March 10, 2023. The new film will see Idris Elba return as the titular detective, this time looking to complete one of his most great missions ever.

"In the epic sequel to the award-winning television saga reimagined for cinema - a gruesome serial killer terrorizes London while brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther (Idris Elba) sits behind bars," reads -on in the synopsis. "Haunted by his failure to capture the cyberpsychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary."

Luther: The Fallen Sun is directed by Emmy-nominated Jamie Payne, from a script written by series creator Neil Cross. Joining Elba are new cast members Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis and Jess Liaudin, with Dermot Crowley also reprising his role as Martin Schenk.

It is produced by Cross, Elba, Peter Chernin, David Ready and Jenno Topping. Executive producers are Kris Thykier, Priscilla Paris, Brendan Ferguson, Miki Emmrich and Dan Finlay.

A Luther film has been in discussion for over 10 years now, with co-creator Neil Cross talking about an adaptation as early as 2011. After the series ended, however, talks began to heat up , with Netflix finally announcing that a movie would be made.
