A 33-year-old man was stunned to find he was born with ovaries and a uterus after going to the doctor complaining of blood in his urine and pain in his abdomen.

Chen Li, whose name has been changed to protect his identity, originally from China, only found out after a visit to the doctor that he was born intersex.

Although he has male genitalia, he was born with female sex chromosomes, ovaries and a uterus, the man's doctors from a small town in Sichuan province have informed.

Chen had spent more than 20 years having her period without realizing it, passing recurring blood in her urine and pain in her abdomen.

After experiencing sustained discomfort in and around his stomach, a doctor diagnosed him with appendicitis.

But after treatment the pain continued and a medical examination last year revealed the real cause of his condition.

Chen had below average levels of the male sex hormone androgen and her female sex hormone levels were comparable to those of a healthy adult woman.

The surgeon who performed the operation, Luo Xiping, told the patient "quickly felt comfortable and his confidence was restored [after the operation].

"From this moment on, he can live his life as a man, but he cannot reproduce because his testicles cannot produce sperm".

Luo said the disease is often discovered as early as adolescence. And while they have little impact on a person's physical health, it could lead to psychological trauma, he claimed.

In March last year, a similar case occurred when a 25-year-old woman in China was found to be born with male chromosomes after seeing a doctor about an ankle injury .

The young woman, known only as Pingping, had never had a period in her life, but admitted she hid the fact...
