A classic car collector was amazed to discover a mummified cat inside a ramshackle Soviet-era vehicle he had scavenged from eBay.

Oliver Rietz found the feline remains in the back seat of the Trabant 601 while cleaning it in his hometown of Llmenau, Thuringia in central Germany this month.

He thinks the moggy died out decades ago, with an expert explaining that dead cats keep very well in dry conditions.

Rietz already had a fleet of 74 historic East German vehicles including ambulances, Wartburgs, army vehicles and fire engines when he bought the Trabant, which went into production. was discontinued in the 90s.

He had spotted the bargain on eBay and decided it was time to expand his collection.

Rietz learned from the salesman that the Trabi made its way west after German reunification in the back of a grain truck.

It was later used by local villagers as a toy and for walking around the fields.

Its license plate UD-28-27 indicated that it came from the small town of Oschatz in Saxony, the state where the model was originally produced.

Fascinated by the story, Rietz quickly drove to Deggendorf in Lower Bavaria to buy the 60-year-old car, which had been sitting in a barn for some time.
