A photographer stepped on the most poisonous fish in the world, and despite knowing it could die in less than an hour, he made a TikTok video.

Adam Clancy treated the severe pain caused by stonefish poison by drinking wine and whiskey after refusing painkillers.

The 31-year-old, from NSW, Australia, survived the ordeal and months later removed a 2cm beard that had lodged in his foot during the attack.

He was wading off Queensland's Moreton Island on the night of April 22 with his camera in hand when he stepped on the fish incognito.

Adam quickly took a picture as she swam away and asked his friend to keep taking pictures.

Venomous stonefish deliver their poison using 13 spiky barbs and can induce fatal paralysis, breathing difficulties and heart failure in humans.

A cure of anti-venom is recommended for anyone impaled by one.

Another friend was given a bucket of hot water for Adam's foot while waiting for paramedics to come ashore.

He has since admitted that he doesn't know why he refused painkillers from doctors as his pain was excruciating.

"Yeah, [painkillers] probably would have been the best option, but two glasses of whiskey and a bottle of Shiraz helped me sleep that night," he said.

Adam was also advised to go to the hospital on the mainland the next day, but instead stayed on the island and returned to work.

He posted a TikTok video with a glass of wine in his hand, saying he had just stepped on the "most poisonous fish in the world".
