The Portugal international has told the club he wants to leave to play Champions League football and was excused from season preparations ahead of talks with Erik ten Hag last week.

But although his agent Jorge Mendes held talks with most of Europe's top clubs, he was unable to find a suitor for his client, leaving Ronaldo no choice but to see his contract at United.

Ronaldo was replaced at the break by Amad Diallo, who gave United the lead almost immediately with a rebound from close range, before the arrival of Alvaro Garcia Rivera ten minutes later saw Rayo Vallecano equalize.

Ten Hag spoke generally about his team's performance after the game, suggesting they are "season ready".

Ten Hag also praised United star Alejandro Garnacho after the draw:

"What you want is also a young player who deserves a chance," continued Ten Hag.

"We want to give them that chance and he showed himself in pre-season [training] and that's why he came [to start]. He played pretty well and that's encouraging. He He's just a teenager, but his performance was really good."

Talking about Lisandro Martinez, Ten Hag added: "I think it was a very good combination with Rapha [Varane] and they played very solidly. It was good to see. The question is always how do you fit in and I think he can fit into the team really well."
