Man Utd: Stam predicts how Ferguson would have reacted to Ronaldo's petulance - 'big hair dryer!'

Man Utd legend Jaap Stam doesn't think Sir Alex Ferguson would have reacted positively to Cristiano Ronaldo's recent antics.

The 37-year-old caused a scene earlier this week and took all the attention away from United's impressive 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Ronaldo started on the bench and Man Utd played brilliantly without him as they knocked out Spurs with relative ease.

The striker was clearly unhappy to be left on the sidelines, as before the final whistle he walked down the touchline to leave early.

Erik ten Hag later confirmed that the experienced striker refused to come off the bench.

Ronaldo was rightly punished afterwards. He won't feature against Chelsea this weekend and is expected to train away from the first team for the foreseeable future.

The Portugal international attempted to save face after his antics by admitting he lost it 'in the heat of the moment'.

"I have always tried to set an example myself for young people who have grown up in all the teams I have represented.

"Unfortunately this is not always possible and sometimes the heat of the moment gets the better of us.

"Right now I just feel like I have to keep working hard at Carrington, supporting my teammates and being ready for anything in any game.

"Yielding to pressure is not an option. It never was. This is Manchester United, and we have to stick together. Soon we will be together again."

Stam and Ronaldo both played under club legend Ferguson, who never took crap from players.

The former defender thinks Ten Hag's reaction to the incident is 'normal'.

"I think it's a normal reaction that ten Hag did, and Ronaldo knows that too because he's a player of his experience, the quality he has, what he's done ", Stam told Football Daily.

When asked how Ferguson would have handled the latest incident involving Ronaldo, Stam replied, "Talk about the hair dryer, that would have been a big hair dryer."

The Dutchman also expressed his sympathy for Ronaldo: "He's not happy not to play. Of course he's not. It wouldn't be a good thing if he was happy to play. sit on the bench.

"It's not fair to him to be remembered for this situation. He's been world class, I still think he's world class, and you don't want to go into the books of history by leaving the field because you are not happy not to play.

"He'll probably come in now and apologize, but it'll always be on people's minds that he did something wrong."
