Max Verstappen asks for updates from Red Bull despite Championship lead over Charles Leclerc

Max Verstappen has urged Red Bull to continue to improve their car despite a dominating start to the World Championship. The defending champion has won six races this season, with Red Bull winning every race between Imola in April and Canada in June.

Verstappen has finished on the podium in every race he has finished this season except for the British Grand Prix where he suffered extensive damage. However, the Dutchman is not happy as he suggested the team could still be behind Ferrari at pure pace.

He has called on Red Bull boss Christian Horner to ensure further improvements are fitted to the car so the team doesn't fall behind. He said: "Overall from my feeling it's still a bit of a hunt and with the weight of the car we're still overweight which is also costing us lap time.

"So we always have to update the car and they have to work all the time, which is not a guarantee.

When people say "Red Bull has been really good in the past at making upgrades and developments" we have to show it again because every year if you start thinking like that normally you'll take late because you think you're good.

"We always have to show that we're good at it and that's what we try to do." Ferrari stole the initial advantage with Leclerc taking two wins from the first three races as Verstappen retired with mechanical failure.

This allowed the Monegasque to build up an advantage of more than 40 points which has since been recovered. Red Bull came close to pure pace, but Ferrari's own issues played their part.

Leclerc was forced out of the Spanish and Azerbaijan Grands Prix due to mechanical issues. This jeopardized his race in Canada as he was forced to take grid penalties while errors in strategy also saw the Prancing Horse lose points.

However, Verstappen has always suggested that car development will be the most important factor in this season's title hunt. He added: "The things you learn about the car this year are way more important than what you learned in previous years.

"That's because you've basically been working with cars for a while, and it seemed like everyone was getting a bit towards the end of development. Of course, every year people still improve their cars, but I don't think it's as drastic as what we've done this year."
