Foreign supporters of Vladimir Putin have pleaded with Russia to invade their country after a key Kremlin propaganda figure said it was part of their “plan” to occupy it.

Pro-Russian separatists in Transnistria, a region of Moldova on the border with Ukraine, have called for the region to become part of the Russian nation-state as their own country begins talks on the entry into the European Union.

The movement is led by former president and close ally Igor Dodon, referred to in the media as "Putin's mini-me" and "the tsar's doormat".

He met the Russian leader several times, and was even once called his "personal jester" by the man himself at a meeting of the Eurasian Economic Summit.

Despite losing to pro-EU Maia Sandu in Moldova's 2020 national elections, Dodon remains a major presence on the political scene and has led huge street protests against a law banning Putin's symbols - such as the letter "Z" - earlier this year.

He has since been placed under house arrest.

Fresh calls have also come after a recent interview with pro-Kremlin late-night TV host Vladimir Soloviev on Russian television saw him accidentally 'reveal' Russia's strategy to occupy the region.

Pousset by an Italian TV interviewer, Mr. Soloviev was asked: "If your target is only Donbass, why don't you attack only here?
