Messi, Neymar and 8 other players HATED by fans of their own club

Lionel Messi and Neymar have been lambasted by PSG ultras after the club's disappointing 2022-23 campaign.

Messi looks set to leave the Parc des Princes at the end of the season as fans gathered outside Neymar's house and chanted 'fuck you' at the Brazilian.

But the duo are not the first to feel the wrath of fans at their own club. Here are eight more examples of players who were hated - at least for a while - by their own club's supporters.

David Beckham

Manchester United fans staunchly defended their famous number 7 as the rest of the country surrounded him after his red card against Argentina in England's 1998 World Cup elimination.

But later in his career, Beckham faced the wrath of his club fans, after leaving LA Galaxy to join AC Milan on loan in 2009. This has apparently been read by many, given that his arrival from Real Madrid was meant to signal a great new era for soccer in North America.

Beckham missed 17 Galaxy games while strutting at the San Siro, leading to a chilly reception on his return - he was booed by fans at the MLS club, with a banner reading 'Go Home Fraud".

The former England international eventually won over his detractors, staying in Los Angeles until 2012 and winning the MLS Cup in his last two years there, while in 2011 he was named "MLS Comeback Player of the Year".

Charles Itandje

Itandje spent three years on Liverpool's books between 2007 and 2010. He was very much a substitute and never made a Premier League appearance, and his time at Anfield would have been totally forgettable were it not for his conduct during the Premier League. 'A Hillsborough Memorial Services.

The Cameroon goalkeeper was pictured laughing and nudging a team-mate like a bored teenager while on duty. He was suspended for 14 days and fined two weeks pay and made matters worse by claiming [angry fans were overreacting.

"It's a 30-second clip that people go too far on," he told French newspaper Today Sport. "You have to see an hour of video if you want to judge my behavior but you know the newspapers [in England]. They do a lot of things."

Unsurprisingly, he left Liverpool soon after, first on loan to Macedonian side Kavala and then released from his contract.

Gareth Bale

You suspect that over time the Welshman's legacy at Madrid will be revisited and it will be his contributions on the pitch that will be long remembered.

After all, he is a player who has won no less than five Champions Leagues with the club, featuring prominently in four of them - and scored two of the club's greatest goals; against Barcelona in the 2014 Copa del Rey final and against Liverpool in the 2018 Champions League final.

But Bale endured a terse relationship with the Madrid faithful in his final years with the club, including after posing with a flag that read 'Wales. Golf. Madrid' - referring to the perception that cared more about representing his country and playing golf than his club.

He was loudly whistled on his return to the Bernabeu.

Joleon Lescott

Lescott was a childhood Villa fan, but his lonely season at the club left a lot to be desired.

Pro tip: If you want the fans to like you, don't 'accidentally' tweet a picture of a big £120,000 Mercedes in the middle of a dismal relegation battle.

Pro tip 2: Don't describe said relegation as "a burden on your shoulders" when it was finally confirmed.
