Montenegro gunman kills 10 in the street before being shot and killed

Two children are among the dead and six others were injured, according to a public prosecutor. Witnesses said the shooter randomly fired at people.

CETINJE, Montenegro — Eleven people, including two children and the shooter, were killed in a mass shooting in Montenegro on Friday, and six others were injured, a prosecutor told TV Vijesti after an initial crime scene investigation.

The shooting took place in the town of Cetinje, about 22 miles west of Podgorica, the capital of the small Balkan nation.

"When we arrived at the scene, we saw nine corpses, including two children, and two others died on the way to the hospital,” prosecutor Andrijana Nastic told TV Vijesti.

Ms. . Nastic did not specify the ages of the children killed and could not reveal further details regarding the identities of the victims. Local media had earlier reported that a police officer was among the injured.

"I can only say that the shooter was killed by a citizen," said Mrs Nastic. Local media had earlier reported that the police had killed the gunman.

According to police sources quoted by RTCG, a public television channel, the attack, carried out by a 34-year-old man, came after a family dispute. Police did not release a statement about the attack, but blocked the site of the shooting.

RTCG, citing witnesses, said the attacker was shooting randomly at people walking down the street.

Prime Minister Dritan Abazovic of Montenegro wrote on his Telegram channel that there had been "a tragedy unprecedented" in Cetinje and said a three-day mourning period would be declared in Montenegro from Friday evening.
