More powerful MacBooks coming? Apple could launch models with M2 chips this fall

Apple Inc AAPL MacBook Pro laptops with M2 Pro and M2 Max processors could arrive within months.

What happened: The Tim Cook-led tech giant has a fast schedule for both processors, according to Apple watcher Mark Gurman, AppleInsider reported.< /p>

The M2 Pro and M2 Max chips could arrive in 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models as early as fall or as early as 2023.

Both laptops aren't expected to see many cosmetic changes, and the designs should "stay much the same," according to Gurman, AppleInsider reported.

Why it matters: If an update to the 14-inch and 16-inch models happens in the fall, it could render the existing M1 Pro and M1 Max models of both laptops obsolete earlier, noted Apple Insider.

The M1 Pro and M1 Max models were introduced in the fall of 2021 and replacement chips would mean they would be obsolete in one year instead of the usual 1.5 year cycle or two years for such devices.

Previously, Gurman said the M2 Pro has 12 CPU cores and 16 graphics cores and the M2 Max comes with 12 CPU cores and 32 graphics cores.

The Apple reporter said in March that he expects at least two or three new Macs to launch in mid-2022.

Price Action: On Friday, Apple shares closed up 1.15% at $150.17 in the regular session, according to data from Benzinga Pro.

Benzinga's View: The launch of new MacBook models has been buzzing since Apple announced the M2 series of chips at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June. Taiwan-based Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects a new 15-inch MacBook to enter mass production in the first half of 2023. Gurman's latest predictions bolster expectations for MacBook lineup .
