MPM Premium Covers 'Wolf and Dog' Ahead of Venice Premiere, Releases Trailer (EXCLUSIVE)

MPM Premium has taken over Cláudia Varejão's coming-of-age drama "Wolf and Dog" (Lobo e cão), which has its world premiere at Venice Days, a sidebar of the Venice Film Festival. Variety got exclusive access to the trailer.

The film centers on Ana, born in São Miguel, an island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean , governed by religion and traditions. She is the middle child of a family of three, growing up with her mother and grandmother. Growing up, Ana realized that girls and boys had different tasks.

Through her friendship with Luis, her queer best friend who loves dresses as much as pants, Ana asks the world promised to him. When her friend Cloé arrives from Canada, Ana embarks on a journey that will take her beyond her limited horizons.

Varejão commented: "What motivates me is the struggle for personal freedom, the combating socio-economic inequalities and the injustices faced by minorities, and these are issues, I believe, that concern us all. This is particularly the case when it comes to more isolated contexts, such as the islands, where traditions and ancestral beliefs are preserved and prevent societies from opening up to change. But young people care little about heritage: it questions and breaks the moulds; it opens new paths. There is no There's no bolder time or place. That's when the veils are lifted and the eyes receive everything, for the first time, without judging. These are bright days when love can accomplish anything."

"Wolf And Dog" is produced by Terratreme Filmes in co-production with La Belle Affaire Productions, with the support of the ICA and of the Aide Aux Cinémas Du Monde of the CNC. The producer is João Matos from Terratreme Filmes. The co-producer is Jérôme Blesson at La Belle Affaire.

The Portuguese director's previous work includes the 2020 documentary "Amor Fati", which premiered at Visions Du Réel, DocLisboa, IFFR, CPH-DOX, Shanghai and Gijon, and the 2016 documentary "Ama-San", which screened in Karlovy Vary, DocLisboa, Cartagena and Sydney.

"Wolf and Dog" is part of MPM Premium's push towards emerging talent via its label d New Visions author, which includes "Rafiki" by Wanuri Kahiu.
