Music Emmys A mix of wins and upsets predicted as 'The White Lotus' dominates

Music from "The White Lotus", "Severance", "Stranger Things", and "Schmigadoon! won the Creative Arts Emmys on Sunday night in a mix of wins and predicted upsets.

The big winner is the Montreal composer of Chilean origin Cristobal Tapia de Veer who walked away with a pair of statues for his music for HBO's "The White Lotus", for the title's main theme music, and for the musical composition of a limited or anthology series, film or special.

His primal drum beats, wordless vocals and wooden flutes create a tropical vibe for the Hawaiian resort town and its quirky visitors. And although it was listed in the "limited series" category, "The White Lotus" is set to return for a second season.

Theodore Shapiro won his first Emmy for "Severance," in the music composition category for a series. It's the first major industry award for the highly respected composer, who was never nominated for an Oscar (despite hits like 'The Devil Wears Prada' and 'Tropic Thunder') and has never was nominated only once for the Emmy Awards, ten years ago, before the two nominations this year for "Severance" (for the composition and the main title theme).

Music supervisor Nora Felder, for her fourth nomination for "Stranger Things," finally won the award Netflix sci-fi series, especially the fourth episode whose climax included a song by Kate Bush ("Running Up That Hill" from 1985) which returned to the charts.

"There are so many reasons I think that song resonated," Felder said in the wings. "Kate Bush said herself that she always saw it as a way to switch places: if a man could switch places with a woman, we could understand each other better. That alone resonates today for so many people. J call these types of placements “Kismet placements,” where the song seems to line up perfectly for all our purposes.

In what could be considered a shake-up, the song Emmy (officially "music and lyrics") went to Cinco Paul for the Apple Plus series "Schmigadoon!" The musical beat two songs from "Euphoria" and one each from "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" and "This Is Us." Paul was not only the co-creator and co-writer but also the songwriter; his winning song was "Corn Puddin'", an animated hoedown for the show's Appalachian setting.

"'Corn Puddin' was kind of the thing people reacted to the most, which has the most listens on Spotify and all those places,” Paul said backstage. "Really, I think it's probably the song that best represents what the show is about, as cheesy as it is, so to speak."

The Creative Arts Emmys have been split into two streams this year, with some hosting Sunday nights and others the day before.

Saturday night, Adam Blackstone won the Emmy for Outstanding Musical Direction at "Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show,” one of three the show won, including an Outstanding Variety Special.

Behind the scenes, Blackstone noted that he picked the songs performed by Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar and 50 Cent.

For his third Super Bowl halftime extravaganza, he said he didn't want not "leave the viewer wanting nothing more, or missing their favorite moments from each of their favorite artists."

Also Saturday night, veteran television composer David Schwartz won the documentary music category for the documentary by Amy Poehler" Lucy and Desi. This was her fourth nomination in the past 20 years (including music for "Wolf Lake", "Deadwood" and "Arrested Development"), but her first win.< /p>

Unlike last year, when Lucasfilm and Marvel series such as "The Mandalorian" and " WandaVision" triumphed in music categories, with this year's Marvel series "Loki" and "Moon Knight" being overtaken by less flashy series "Severance" and "The White Lotus".
