New US trailer for 'The Super 8 Years' about growing up in France

The Super 8 Years Doc Trailer

"My mother used to live with us. Her devotion to children gives me freedom." Kino Lorber has released the official US trailer for an acclaimed French documentary film titled The Super 8 Years< /em>, hitting very limited US theaters starting this month. The film premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival in the Directors' Fortnight, and it also recently premiered at the New York Film Festival in the fall. The Super 8 Years chronicles the early life of French writer and 2022 Nobel Laureate Annie Ernaux, best known for her acclaimed novels. She is making the film with her son, David, thinking back to her time in France with two children in the 1970s. It is entirely made up of personal video footage (from a Super 8 camera!) shot by Ernaux and his family of 1972 to 1981, which directly feed into the themes of his work over the past 60 years. "Takes us from vacations and family rituals in bourgeois suburban France to overseas trips to Albania and Egypt, Spain and the USSR." It feels like a very humble and thoughtful look at his life and how everything is changing.

The Super 8 Years Poster

French writer and 2022 Nobel Laureate Annie Ernaux, whose novels and memoirs have earned her a devoted following (and whose Autobiographical Event has been adapted into a Happening), opens a treasure trove with this delicate voyage in her the memory of the family. Compiled from beautifully textured amateur film footage from 1972 to 1981 - when her first books were published, her sons were teenagers and her husband Philippe brought an 8mm camera everywhere they went - this portrait of a time , from a personal place and time and political significance takes us from vacations and family rituals in bourgeois French suburbs to foreign travels in Albania and Egypt, Spain and the USSR. Providing his own introspective voice-over, Ernaux and his co-director, his son David, guide the viewer through fragments of a decade, both diffuse and lively. The Super 8 Year Old is a remarkable visual extension of Annie Ernaux's ongoing literary project to make sense of the mysterious past and unknowable future.

The Super 8 Years, also known as Les Années Super-8 in French, is directed by French writers Annie Ernaux and David Ernaux-Briot, both directing their first feature films. Produced by Philippe Martin and David Thion. This originally premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival at the Directors' Fortnight earlier this year, and it also screened at the Zurich and New York Film Festivals. The film was already broadcast on television in France in August. Kino Lorber will open the documentary The Super 8 Years in select US theaters starting December 16, 2022 this month, with more openings in January. For more information, visit their official website.
