1 alleged kidnapper, 2 rail vandals in the NSCDC network

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) revealed on Tuesday that it apprehended a suspected kidnapper and two individuals involved in the vandalism of railway infrastructure.

During the parade of vandals in Umuahia, Commander Paul Ozoemene Igwebuike said that the Commandant of the Nigerian Navy College of Account and Finance Owerrinta, Captain S. K. Ogogo, had recently handed over two suspects, Mr. Amanze Agwutu (38) and Nwadike Chukwudi (31), who were arrested while transporting allegedly vandalized railway infrastructure from Isuikwuato.

The suspects were found in possession of two Hummer buses registered Abia AKE 650 XA and a Toyota Hiace registered Anambra AWK 267 XB, loaded with 42 and 38 lengths of track respectively.

"Command quickly opened an investigation into the activities of the suspects, the preliminary findings of which revealed the following: The suspects, who claimed to be commercial bus drivers, were hired by a notorious vandal who was implicated in the slipper railway removal business in southeastern Nigeria."

Commander Ozoemene said that some scrap metal dumps serve as hiding places for criminal elements who are currently terrorizing the state. Malefactors have infiltrated the ranks of the real scrap dealers, posing a threat to society.

He further disclosed the arrest of Uchenna Njinkeonye who was previously arrested in 2022 by Abia NSCDC. Njinkeonye is currently the second defendant in a prosecution, accused of being in possession of five vandalized air conditioners by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) office in Umuahia.

The commander also revealed that his men had apprehended a suspected kidnapper, Kingsley Ogbonna (35), and rescued his victim after being held captive for five days.

The arrest took place after receiving reports of suspicious activity at a building located in Alaoji Mkputu, Ugwunnagbo LGA.

The victim had been kidnapped in Aba while she was in front of the gate of her house. The suspect, who is from Edda in Afikpo South LGA of Ebonyi State, has been arrested. He had demanded a ransom of 100 million naira, which was later reduced to 10 million naira.

During the operation, the commander said he recovered 1 AK 45 assault rifle, 1 magazine, 21 live ammunition cartridges, 1 cutlass and 7 ATM cards with different names and belonging to different banks commercial.

Commander Ozoemene took the opportunity to explain the circumstances surrounding the death of scrap metal dealer Amadi Agwu Kelechi, who was shot dead by NSCDC agents in Ubakala.

He mentioned that the dealer insisted that officers not arrest any of the suspects and rushed one of the officers with a cutlass, despite repeated warnings. He described the incident as unfortunate and expressed his condolences to the family.

An investigation has been opened to determine the extent of the officers' culpability, with the assurance that anyone found guilty will face the consequences.

The commander urged the general public to monitor the activities of unscrupulous scrap metal collectors in their neighborhoods and report any suspected security threats.

In response to questions from reporters, the two drivers, Nwadike Chukwudi from Agbaja Nwangele in Imo State and Amanze Agwatu from Mbaise, claimed that they were just transporting goods without knowing they had been stolen.
