1,200 Nigerians died during illegal migration in 2023 - NIS

Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Comptroller of Ekiti State, Abdulrasheed Ademola, has revealed that as many as 1,200 Nigerians have died so far in 2023 as a result of an illegal migration to European countries.

The NIS boss who spoke at the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the service, in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital this weekend, labeled "Enhancing seamless regular migration described 'Japa Syndrome' in Nigeria as a great challenge to those who pass through illegal exit ports in search of greener pastures.

According to him, "Many of our young people are dying in the Sahara Desert, the Mediterranean Sea, etc., which is not worth it.

"According to available data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), at least 1,200 Nigerians have died attempting to migrate through the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea in 2023 alone.< /p>

"For those who survive, the dream of reaching their desired destination quickly becomes a mirage, some spend months or even years in cells abroad for irregular migration, some are taken hostage by pirates who steal, mutilate and sometimes rape the female 'japaists'”

Ademola pointed out that many Nigerians want to travel abroad for reasons they know best, describing it as a welcome idea that must be incorporated into safe, orderly and regular migration.

He commended the Acting Comptroller General, Caroline Wura-ola Adepoju, for finding it necessary to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Nigeria Immigration Service, noting that the past six decades have been a period of passionate service to the nation and the homeland.< /p>

The Chief Security Officer said: “Nigeria's Immigration Service has gone through a series of transformations, taking the country from the analogue years into the digital age.

"The agency has achieved a lot during these years in different areas of operations ranging from the issuance of travel documents such as (passport, visa and residence permit), border management, management migration, national security and many others."
