15-year-old shepherd cuts off farmer's hand in Bauchi

A 15-year-old shepherd, Adamu Ibrahim, allegedly cut off a farmer's left hand during an altercation between the two on Saturday in Bauchi State.

The incident happened in the village of Jital, along the road to Gombe. The herder would have directed the cattle to the farmer's rice field.

According to the police, after the shepherd broke into the farm, a fight ensued, which led to the farmer's hand being amputated.

PREMIUM TIMES learned that the shepherd was subsequently arrested by the police.

The victim was rushed to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi, where he is currently receiving treatment.

However, Bauchi Police Command spokesman, Ahmed Wakili said on Saturday reporters said police were already investigating the incident.

He also said the victim's name was withheld for security reasons.

He said the preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect had a habit of entering the victim's farmland with his cattle and destroying his crop.

Mr. Wakili said the farmer repeatedly complained to the suspect's father, but that didn't stop him from taking cattle to the farmer's rice farm and destroying the crop. p>

"The investigation also revealed that on August 24, 2023, the suspect, armed with a stick and a machete, maliciously invaded the victim's farmland and destroyed the value of the crops, which remains at determine.

“A disagreement ensued in which the suspect used his Sharpe machete to cut the victim as he asked him to leave his farmland; as a result, the victim's left hand was severed.

"After receiving this report, the area commander, metropolitan, took action and activated more preventive measures to avoid circumstances that may lead to a clash between herders and farmers in the area and also ordered the arrest of the suspect”, Mr. Wakili. explained.

Similarly, Police Commissioner Auwal Mohammed on Saturday warned ranchers to avoid trespassing on state farmland and ordered the suspect to be charged in court once the investigation is complete.

The CP also warned that residents should not take the law into their own hands; instead, he advised them to report any crime to the nearest police station for prompt action.
